A Logan man has been sentenced to prison for violently choking, punching and scratching the mother of his three children during a meth-fuelled rampage at Bahrs Scrub.

Steven Robert John Sharry, 45, pleaded guilty at the Beenleigh District Court on Monday to one count of choking and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard Sharry had a longstanding addiction to methamphetamines which led to both his lengthy, 14 page criminal history and the breakdown of his nine year relationship with the woman.

He has prior convictions for trafficking drugs, possessing large quantities of drugs, and property offences.

The court heard Sharry was serving a suspended sentence for his drug offending when he breached a domestic violence protection order which prevented him from coming within 100 metres of his ex-partner’s home.

According to crown prosecutor Zachary Kaplan, Sharry had been served with the order on September 18, 2019 and just two days later, on September 20, he breached it by going into her garage, allegedly to use her printer.

The woman asked Sharry to leave but he refused, so she locked the interior garage door and hid the children in the bedroom.

Sharry forced entry by kicking in the door and found the woman by the bathroom.

The court heard Sharry grabbed the woman around the throat and throttled her backwards and forwards, causing her to lose her breath for five to six seconds and feel pain in her throat.

He threw her to the ground and she desperately pleaded with him to leave, noting in her victim impact statement how croaky her voice sounded after the assault.

Rather than stop, Sharry grabbed her again by the neck, forced her to the floor, and punched her in the head and jaw.

“Why did you make me do this?” Sharry said to the woman, according to a schedule of facts read by the judge.

“It’s textbook domestic violence and puts the complainant in an even more vulnerable position,” said Mr Kaplan.

Sharry left the home and the woman reported the incident to police two days later.

She had significant bruising to her jaw and neck, with tenderness to her skull and scratch marks on her chest and forearm.

The psychological impact is ongoing, with reports she has difficulty sleeping, forming new relationships and increased anxiety.

Sharry was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment and will be eligible for parole on October 30.

The domestic violence protection order will remain active until 2024.
