Brisbane restaurant owner, Nev Scott, recovering in hospital after being thrown from car

A Brisbane restaurant owner is recovering in hospital after he was run over on a busy retail strip after chasing down a thief who had stolen a customer’s bag.

A Brisbane restaurant owner is lucky to be alive after being run over while trying to stop thieves in a popular strip in the city’s southeast.

Nev Scott is recovering at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition following the incident, where a woman allegedly entered his restaurant, Amante Tapas, and stole a customer’s handbag about 11.30pm on Saturday in Bulimba’s Oxford St.

The 46-year-old, who also owns La Quinta, then gave chase on foot where a man was allegedly waiting in a stolen silver BMW.

Mr Scott then grabbed the bag but, according to police, fell to the ground after a struggle and was run over by the rear wheel of the car.

The father-of-one was allegedly left lying in the middle of Oxford St before he was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at the PA Hospital.

He suffered three broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken bone in his knee, a sprained ankle as well as grazes and bruises from head to toe.

He also received 11 staples for cuts to his head.

Mr Scott’s partner Jeanie Smith is understandably devastated by the ordeal has been by his side since Saturday.

“Customers stayed at our restaurant and Danny, our bar manager, rang the ambulance and me,” she said.

“I arrived to find a fire engine, multiple police cars and ambulance within 10 minutes.

“Customers looked after my son and I found Nev with neck brace, in pain and having all his clothes cut off

“By some miracle he only suffered the injuries he had.

“He’s in hospital and they’ve given him nerve block today.”

Ms Smith said her partner was tough and she knew he was going to recover.

He wasn’t opening his eyes but he knew his name,” she said.

“I was awake 36 hours straight and I think then it hit me how lucky he was.

“My dad passed away a year ago and we used my inheritance to open Amante this February.

“It’s been very tough trying to build a business in these times and we have been working seven days a week, raising three kids and had been determined to bring something different to the street.

“I just thought what else will get thrown at us but a lot of Nev’s staff have been with him long term, as he’s had La Quinta for 15 years, they are like family to us.

“So I’m grateful, relieved and looking forward to what’s next.”

A QPS spokesman said police conducting patrols on Saturday night found a stolen silver BMW on Sunnydale St at Upper Mount Gravatt.

While waiting for a tow truck operators, officers saw a man and woman matching the description from the incident in Bulimba.

“The pair fled however were located and arrested,” he said.

A 21-year-old Springfield woman was charged with robbery, grievous bodily harm, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and enter premises and commit indictable offence.

An 18-year-old Inala man was charged with robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter premises and commit indictable offence and two stealing offences.

The two people charged are due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
