A major Brisbane leagues club has started works on a multimillion-dollar revamp with additions to be made to the venue which they believe are a Queensland-first.
The Carina Leagues Club, one of the state’s biggest clubs, is in the middle of construction on a new sports bar and alfresco dining cafe with both to be complete by the end of this year.
However, there is a twist to the project with the new additions to be separate to the leagues club, meaning customers don’t have to be a member and also opening hours can be different compared to the usual venue.

Carina Leagues Club Doug Wakefield said the project was almost a decade in the making but recent events had fast-tracked the process.
“The process for this project started probably five to 10 years ago, it’s been an idea we’ve liked for a while,” he said.
“Then it started to move forward a bit recently then COVID happened which has probably allowed us to move this along even quicker.
“Also one of the big factors is the construction of the new casino in the city, when that comes in it’s going to have a major impact on clubs, so we needed to be able to keep moving forward and thinking of new ideas to make sure the club has a bright future.”
The new project will include the addition of a new state-of-the-art 185 inch LED screen for the sports bar with the aim of becoming a venue where customers can watch all the biggest sporting events, an alfresco cafe and deck adjacent to the sports bar as well as the creation of outdoor lawn dining spaces near the cafe.
It is expected to bring in more than 50 jobs in the coming years.
Carina Leagues Club chairman Wade Core said it was important for the club to look at options to bring in new income after COVID-19 so the club could give back to the local community as they did before the pandemic.
The comments come after the club was forced to cut more than $600,000 in sponsorships of local sporting clubs following the outbreak of the coronavirus.
He also said the aim was to bring a family-friendly pub type of atmosphere to the location and expected the outdoor dining area, which would be visible to the nearby traffic from the busy Creek Rd, to be a major attraction.
The venue’s new sports bar is scheduled to open in late October with the cafe expected to open a month later.
