SPORTING clubs in Brisbane’s southeast have been dealt a blow after a major leagues club was forced to cut more than $600,000 in sponsorships.
Carina Leagues Club is set to reopen this afternoon after their doors were closed for more than three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The popular venue was able to keep majority of their staff employed with the JobKeeper payments from the Federal Government but chairman, Wade Core, said closure has impacted the local community more than anything else.

“We have more than 15 sponsorship agreements with local clubs and we’ve had to terminate all of them,” Mr Core said.
“That’s in excess of $600,000 we spend in the community.
“We’re not sure how heavily this has impacted the individual clubs as far as their ability to survive but it will probably result in parents having to pay more.”
The leagues club previously sponsored clubs such as Southern Districts Spartans Basketball, Carina Leagues Tigers Netball, Carina Junior Rugby League, Holland Park Hawks soccer, Easts Hockey and more.
The loss of revenue also meant the Carina Leagues Club had to cut ties with the Brisbane Broncos after 16 years, a move that devastated Mr Core.
But with life slowly returning to normal and stage three of the restrictions lifting brought forward to today by the State Government, Mr Core said he hoped good business could turn it all around.
“We’ve supported the community, now we’re really hoping the community can get behind us,” he said.
“We hope that business can be great when we reopen and we can reignite all the sponsorships we’ve had to cut.
“We’re just really excited to reopen and see everyone again.
“Apart from our bistro, which will be closed for another week or so, we’ll be back to business as usual, obviously still abiding by the restrictions in place.
“We’re bracing for the place to be flooded when we reopen, probably expecting it to be at 75 to 80 per cent of what it normally is.”
The Carina Leagues Club will open its doors at 3pm.
