Australian swimming golden girl Bronte Job needs little excuse to smile, but the Coorparoo schoolgirl was “over the moon’’ after claiming first place at the world junior swimming championships held in Budapest yesterday.
The All Hallows’ School student from Rackley Centenary produced a personal best effort when it countered most to claim gold in the 50m backstroke.
Her time was in the top six overall times for an Australian backstroker.
Job’s coach Damien Jones said her training leading up to the meet indicated she would be in the frame for a final.
“She had been very consistent with her training in this prep, and with consistency comes confidence,’’ Jones said.
“You knew she was in good shape.
“When you have done the work and have confidence you have done the work, it (swimming in a final) is a celebration of all the hard work you had done to get into the competition.’’
HOW JOB’S BUBBLY PERSONALITY HELPS HER TEAM MATES
It was the teenager’s first international meet and she displayed remarkable composure to rise to the occasion.
“To peak at an international event for the first time is an unbelievable story in itself.,’’ Jones said.
All Hallows’ School principal Mrs Catherine O’Kane said the community was proud of Job.
“We are very proud of Bronte’s outstanding achievement in Budapest, which is a testament to her dedication to training and her determination to achieving at the highest level,’’ she said.
“Our whole school community is looking forward to celebrating Bronte’s success on her return, together with her fellow ahsisters Lizzie Dekkers and Georgia Powell, who all represented Australia at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.’’
Job is a Brisbane Jets junior who has the fondest of memories swimming with her friends in the Stones Corner-based pool.
JOB’S TEAM MATE THOMAS NEILL SHINES AT WORLD JUNIORS
Job’s swimming went to another level under Jones at Rackley Centenary after he reorganised her stroke.
Out of the pool Job has an infectious personality around her Rackley Centenary teammates and was renowned for her positive outlook and smile at training come rain, hail or shine.
Fellow All Hallows students Dekkers and Powell, from Newmarket Racers, also performed well. Dekkers, the baby of the swim team, made a final.
