Competitive swimmers spend hour after hour, week after week with their heads under water. So what do they think about?
Surely it can’t all be about correct stroke techniques and splits, can it?
“I know a lot of coaches say you should be thinking about technique and different aspects of your stroke, but to be honest you might get a song stuck in your head or random thoughts coming into your mind,’’ Georgia Powell revealed.
Powell and her team mate from the Newmarket Racers, Elizabeth Dekkers, have both been selected in a white hot Australian team bound for the world junior championships in Budapest in late August.
So strong is the squad that St Peters Western Swim Club’s Ella Ramsay and Albany Creek Swim Club’s Samuel Short missed the cut, and any of their peers will let you know how good that pair are.

Powell and Dekkers said they never thought about making the Australian team when they competed at the age nationals in April.
Certainly for Dekkers, the baby of the squad, it was the last thing on her mind.
Powell, a 200m breaststroke exponent, spoke for both of them when she said: “You think more about executing race plans, effort wise, doing your best and doing the best performance for you and not really worrying about placings.
“(But) it is really nice to have that goal and be able to achieve it. “And to be able to do a PB to make the team is really nice.’’

Dekkers is a butterfly merchant who has been swimming at Newmarket pool, both for fun and competitively, all of her life.
Powell has also been with Steve and Bob Miller’s squad for the past nine years. “So I know it pretty well.’’

Powell said it was nice for the pair, who both attend All Hallows’ School, to reflect on their achievement in making the Australian team, but now it was down to business to prepare for the meet.
