Construction of the long-awaited $31 million Everton Park Link Road is underway, with trucks and demountable buildings arriving on site this week.
The road will connect South Pine Rd, north of the Kedron Brook, to Stafford Rd, east of Mountridge St, passing behind the former Masters building.
It will allow some traffic to bypass the intersection of Stafford and South Pine roads at Everton Park which was number eight on Queensland’s top 10 most congested roads according to RACQ’s 2020 Red Spot Congestion Survey after being number five in 2019.
Funding for the project was first announced in 2018.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said it would also include active transport options with connections to the Kedron Brook Bikeway and new pedestrian facilities.
“We have also taken extra measures to help reduce travel times by removing the right-turn from South Pine Road into Stafford Road during rush hour,” Mr Bailey said.
“This will provide more traffic ‘green time’ and improve travel times through the intersection.
“It’s part of a much larger plan to bust congestion in the local area with potential future upgrades to include an upgrade of the Stafford Rd and South Pine Rd intersection.”
Mr Bailey said because it would be a new road, most work would occur away from existing roads.
“There may be some impacts however while crews deliver supplies and equipment, and I want to thank the community for its continued support and interest,” he said.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2021, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Mr Bailey said the project would create 60 jobs as the state tackled the economic impacts of COVID-19.
