The ballot draws have been confirmed and five candidates, spanning the full spectrum of the political ideology, have nominated to contest the seat of Sandgate at the State General Election on October 31.
The Sandgate electorate, which comprises the suburbs of Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Deagon, Brighton, Bracken Ridge, Fitzgibbon and Taigum, is considered a safe Labor Party seat, having been won by the ALP at all save for one election since 1960.

There are 10,000 jobs up for grabs in the region with one of the state’s highest unemployment rates
ALP member Stirling Hinchliffe first won the seat in 2015, then again in 2017, and hopes to retain his position for a third term.
He will be contested by Rodney Miles of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, Clark Siemsen of the Liberal National Party, Miree Le Roy of The Greens and independent candidate Todd Milham.
With just two weeks until the election, each candidate has revealed why they believe they are the best choice to represent the bayside region at state parliament.
Todd Milham
Independent
“I consider myself as the best choice for the area for a multitude of reasons.
I am passionate about helping people to improve their livelihoods; there is no better avenue to this than creating legislation that lifts every member of society up, rather than a select few.
As part of my ‘Country needs to Breathe Again’ policy, I hope to beautify the various green and wild spaces throughout the electorate.
Imagine passing your local creek and instead of weeds and litter, you saw turtles, migratory birds, and native flora?
The Sandgate electorate has less-than-desirable public transport services; the only way to bust congestion, is to take cars off the road – not build more roads and push the bottleneck further down the track. Implementing free, frequent public transport would ensure we all get to work, school or leisure activities on-time and stress-free.”
Clark Siemsen
“I’ve lived locally for over 30 years and have raised my family in our beautiful community. As an electrician, I’ve seen first-hand the challenges facing our community as a result of Labor’s economic failures.
I’m standing up for Sandgate because you deserve better. Even before coronavirus, Queensland had the worst unemployment in Australia, and the most business bankruptcies. We need change and Deb Frecklington and I have a plan to get Sandgate working again.
Within 100 days of an LNP Government, we will deliver a budget and establish an Economic Recovery Agency to lead our economy out of recession. Locals will also benefit from the LNP’s $300 rego rebate, which will ease cost of living pressures on registered car owners in Sandgate.
With your support, I will fight to create jobs in our community, clear surgery waiting lists and to work with Deb Frecklington to unleash Queensland’s potential.”
Miree Le Roy
Greens
“I am running for Sandgate to give voters a bold, progressive alternative to the major parties, who are too beholden to their corporate donors to deliver for us.
Unlike the other parties, my campaign does not take corporate donations, so I will always put the interests of the community first. We need an economic recovery where no one is left behind.
Under our plan, we will invest in publicly-owned renewable energy and social housing which will create up to ten thousand jobs, address our community’s growing housing crisis, and put us on the path to a cleaner, greener and fairer society.
We will create genuinely free health care with more doctors, nurses and community health clinics. We will fully-fund our schools by investing $44 million for schools in Sandgate, which means more teachers, smaller class sizes, and no more fees.
Our plans are funded by making big mining corporations, developers and banks pay their fair share in taxes.”
Stirling Hinchliffe
Labor
“The Palaszczuk Government’s strong health response has helped keep
Queenslanders safe and allowed us to start on the road to recovery.
Only Labor and I can deliver for Queensland with our recovery plan which is focused
on supporting and investing in Queensland workers and businesses to create local
jobs.
Our plan will invest $51 billion over the next four years in infrastructure spending
including $128 million for the Beams Road Overpass in Fitzgibbon.
Labor has also committed $1 billion for the Great Schools Great Future plan which
locally will see $5 million for a performing arts hall at Sandgate High and half a
million for Bracken Ridge High.
We’ll also invest in our manufacturing future by delivering a $28.9 million robotics
and advanced manufacturing centre on the northside. This facility will equip
Queenslanders with the skills they need for the jobs of tomorrow.
Only Labor has the plan to put Queensland on the road to recovery.”
Rodney Miles
Pauline Hanson’s One Nation
Quest Community News reached out to Mr Miles but did not receive a response.
There is little known about Mr Miles, who also ran for the seat of Ryan, in Brisbane’s west, during the 2019 federal election.
He is listed as the general secretary for the party.
