Residents fear a 30 storey tower development planned for a suburb north of Brisbane will take away the “village feel”.

Developer and construction company Traders in Purple announced their plans to transform 1 Redcliffe Pde, at Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, into a residential, dining and retail hub in March.

The site is located across the road from the Mon Komo Hotel, which is currently the tallest building on the Redcliffe foreshore.

Their plan, which has not yet been lodged with Moreton Bay Regional Council, is to build two towers, with one standing 30 storeys tall, providing options for residential and short term accommodation.

It will also include a laneway with retail and dining options.

Traders in Purple held four community consultation sessions at Redcliffe to gauge residents’ reactions, before submitting a development application.

Company CEO Brett Robinson said more than 250 people attended the sessions.

“The local residents who attended were reflective of the diverse Redcliffe community, different age groups, families who have lived on the Peninsula for generations and those who have made the move for a sea change,” Mr Robinson said.

Traders in Purple received 106 feedback forms that provided a variety of responses.

“Many of the residents commented on the need for more activation along the foreshore and so they loved what we have proposed for the lower levels.

“As we had anticipated, height was the major concern for residents, however there was support for a departure from the existing height restriction to achieve revitalisation of the Redcliffe CBD,” Mr Robinson said.

Traders in Purple consultation summary document says residents had four themes.

1. Concerns about an increase in height above the current planning restriction

2. Redcliffe needs investment to ensure long-term sustainability

3. The need for enhanced road/parking infrastructure

4. Adverse social impact

In the document states: “Attendees want to maintain the “village feel” that currently exists and as such, are concerned that an increase in residents in such a concentrated area will detract from this. It is important for developments in the area to remain in keeping with both the current surrounds and the history on the area.”

The community report will be compiled and made publicly available on the 1 Redcliffe Parade website (www.oneredcliffe.com).

“Traders in Purple will liaise with council and commence a development application, with the hopes of starting construction in three to four years,” Mr Robinson said.

“We intend to deliver something that is truly unique and community driven, and positions Redcliffe as a destination with regional desirability.”

So much negativity whenever developments are proposed. The more development in the area, the more roads and infrastructure will also be improved, along with more people here which will also make it more feasible to open more venues for entertainment, later night dining etc. It can’t stay deadcliffe forever. — Josh de Raadt, via Facebook.

Horrible the way Redcliffe is going with all the high rises. Still no decent shops, very little entertainment, shocking parking and changing Redcliffe for the worst. — Margaret Walker, via Facebook

Please leave this beautiful place alone. It has its own uniqueness, yes a few areas may need a bit of tidying up and a bit of updating but don’t ruin a beautiful place making it look like other cities. — Angelene Dewson, via Facebook

No more high-rise apartment please. Too many sitting vacant as it is. Do we really want to end up looking like the Gold Coast? Where is the infrastructure to support it? Our roads are gridlocked already. — Jacqueline Dadson, via Facebook

Traders in Purple’s proposal for 1 Redcliffe Pde is not the sort of development we need in this area. We don’t want 10-storey buildings let along a 30-storey one. Tony Ethell, via email

This corner is an important piece of real estate that can have long lasting effects on how the area works. The design is really important and must connect the area and look amazing. — Boris Boris, via Facebook

Brilliant. Love how Redcliffe is changing for the better. More appealing for the younger families. — Paul Aspin, via Facebook

I agree it needs developing. The lower part looks good, but not 30 storeys high. Say in line with the rest of the high rise. — Monica Stewart, via Facebook
