Moreton Bay Regional Council have revealed its plans for the $6.8 million upgrade of the Boardman and Klingner roads roundabout at Kippa-Ring, near Redcliffe.

The project, jointly funded by the council and Federal Government, will involve replacing the roundabout with traffic lights.

Additional lanes, pedestrian crossing points and cycle lanes will also be added.

With the Newport Stockland estate only growing, the stadium at Dolphin Stadium, on Klingner Road likely to attract bigger events and the trainline at Kippa-Ring – the roundabout has become a bottleneck, especially during school pick-up and drop-off times.

The roundabout also provides a link to several sporting fields and the Kippa-Ring Shopping Centre.

Officer-in-Charge of Deception Bay Road Policing Unit Sergeant Garth Peake said there had been a fatality at the roundabout many, many years ago.

“I expect that at times it has been a black spot,” Sgt Peake said.

“People can get caught there for some time, just sitting waiting to get around during peak times.

“A signalised intersection is more controlled than roundabouts and offers increased safety.”

Moreton Bay Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said the works would dramatically improve access in and out of the Redcliffe Peninsula.

“As a major entry point from the west of Moreton Bay, this intersection upgrade is vital to the future growth of the Redcliffe Peninsula,” Cr Winchester said.

“I’m looking forward to getting rid of the headache that many locals endured when using the intersection during peak hour.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said the new intersection had been designed to improve safety and reduce peak hour delays.

Council is giving residents a chance to provide feedback on the proposed upgrade.

“The real experts on this road are the locals who drive it every day, so we need their feedback on the proposal to improve safety and network reliability to get it right,” Cr Flannery said.

Council chipped in $2.8 million towards the project with the other $4 million coming from the Federal Government’s Urban Congestion Fund.

Federal LNP MP for Petrie Luke Howarth said: “This intersection upgrade will help residents get home quicker and provide better connectivity between the Redcliffe Peninsula and rest of the Moreton Bay Region”.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2022.

It is not the first time a troublesome Peninsula roundabout has been upgraded to lights – the Rothwell roundabout was upgraded in 2017.

Community consultation closes Monday 15 June 2020.
