With a population boom predicted and massive housing developments on the cards one council has set aside $174 million for major road upgrades. SEE THE SEVEN BIGGEST PROJECTS

Caboolture West development

With a population boom predicted and massive housing developments approved Moreton Bay Regional Council has developed a $174 million plan to fix the region’s already congested roads.

The plan was revealed last week as part of the council’s 2021-22 Budget.

Mayor Peter Flannery said there was no “denying that our road networks are already congested and need significant investment before developments like Caboolture West come online”.

Here are seven of the biggest council road projects in the pipeline for the Moreton Bay region:

Old Gympie Rd

Broken into stages over the next 10 years council plans to invest a total of more than $60 million, over the first four years, to improve this major arterial road.

Council has set aside almost $20 million towards this project in this year’s budget – this includes $12.5 million to upgrade the stretch from Alma Rd to Goodwin Rd and $7.5 million to work on the section between Boundary and Old Gympie roads in Dakabin.

The upgrade of Old Gympie Rd between Boundary Rd and Anzac Ave will include widening the road from two lanes to four, two in each direction, with separate turning lanes at intersections.

Roundabouts will be upgraded to signalised intersections and on-road cycling lanes, improved pathways and signalised pedestrian crossings will also be added.

Henry Rd

The flood prone road is a vital link for Griffin residents and council will put $6 million into upgrading it.

Works include widening and raising the road to improve flood immunity, realignment and signalisation of the intersection of Henry Rd and Dohles Rocks Rd, new turn lanes on all approaches and a signalised pedestrian crossing.

A new intersection will be built on Henry Rd for access to the yet to be constructed Griffin Sports Complex.

The two-year project is expected to cost $14.5 million, and includes $4 million of Federal Government support.

Flinders Pde/Cook Court

Moreton Bay Regional Council will invest $5 million to help increase the capacity of Flinders Parade-Cook Court and Torres Crescent-Diamond Jubilee Way intersections at North Lakes.

The roads which lead to Bunnings and Costco are major bottlenecks.

The project which has $1.3 million support from the Federal Government, includes installing an extra southbound right turn lane on Diamond Jubilee Way, new signalised pedestrian crossings, improved cyclist facilities.

Traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Flinders Pde and Cook Court and the westbound right turn lane will be extended.

The intersection of Flinders Pde and Torres Cst will be converted into a roundabout.

Beeville Rd

Beeville Rd and Frenchs Rd at Petrie will undergo a major $4.9 million makeover during the next 12 months.

The aim is to reduce peak hour delays and congestion at the intersection and to improve safety.

Upgrades include a new traffic lights and additional turning lanes, on-road cycle lanes and signalised pedestrian crossings.

Graham Rd

This Morayfield road has become a major link since the opening of the new bridge on Market Drive – linking the Riverbank Estate with the Bruce Highway.

Council will invest $3.35 million to expand the road from two lanes to four – increasing its capacity and relieving congestion.

The upgrade will also include reconfiguring the drop and go carpark at Morayfield East State School.

William Berry Drive

One of the biggest bottlenecks in Morayfield is the intersection of William Berry Drive and Dickson Road, near the Morayfield Shopping Centre.

Council will pump $3.13 million into fixing the congestion. It will not be a quick fix with works expected to take two years.

Just $1.56 million has been allocated towards this project this year to cover rehabilitating 990m of William Berry Dr and upgrading the intersection with Dickson Rd.

Victoria Ave

Council will put $1.08 million towards road upgrades at Victoria Ave at MacDonnell Rd and Duffield Rd at Margate.

The project will involve transforming the roundabout into a signalised intersection with the aim of improving safety for all road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.

As part of the project the road will also be widened along the frontage with the shop fronts on Victoria Ave to allow for streetscape and street furniture to be installed.

This project is currently in the consultation phase.
