Bunnings and Costco shoppers can rejoice after Moreton Bay Council finally commits to fixing the notorious intersection into Cook Crt at North Lakes.

For several years now, Cook Crt has been the wild west equivalent of traffic management where anything goes.

Plans lodged for 35 industrial warehouse units near Costco

Two of Australia’s most popular big box retail stores — Bunnings and Costco — are situated on the dead end street which comes out right near a McDonald’s and Taco Bell driveway.

During weekends and peak afternoon periods, traffic can bank up for hundreds of metres in all directions, and you can forget about attempting a right turn out of Cook Court — this silly journo tried it once on a Sunday and was stuck there for a good 10 minutes.

With a large new warehouse complex poised for council approval next to Costco, the council’s commitment to fix the intersection is timely indeed.

Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said the council was currently designing a $4 million overhaul of several nearby intersections that would improve road safety and reduce traffic delays and congestion.

“Bunnings and Costco are popular retailers at the best of times, especially on weekends,” Cr Shipway said.

“The resulting congestion is definitely at a point where we need a plan to act.

“No one wants to see traffic backing up from the retail precinct into local streets.”

The upgrade includes traffic lights and extra turning lanes at the Cook Court/Flinders Pde intersection; and a new roundabout at the Flinders Pde/Torres Cres intersection.

There would also be an extra traffic lane between Torres Crescent and Diamond Jubilee Way.

Some people have commented that a roundabout might be a better solution than traffic lights at Cook Court.
