Moreton Bay Regional Council approves new putt putt centre at Redcliffe shopping centre

A council has delivered its verdict on whether or not a developer will be allowed to transform part of a shopping centre north of Brisbane into an 18-hole undersea themed putt putt precinct.

Coronavirus: The $66 billion economic boost

A shopping centre north of Brisbane has been given the green light to transform an unused dining precinct into a mini golf, bar and entertainment facility.

The Redcliffe Undersea Putt & Play will replace the outdoor eating areas and unused retail tenancies at Bluewater Square Shopping Centre, on the corner of Anzac Ave and Sutton Street.

The application was lodged with Moreton Bay Regional Council in May.

A council approved the application on Wednesday.

Part of the area will be enclosed with a under the sea themed mural painted around the outside – making a perfect new selfie location.

The inside of the new 18-hole course is expected to feature a range of marine theme obstacles including giant worms and whirlpools.

It well be decked out with sculptures of humpback whales, sharks, crabs, turtles, stingrays and a crocodile.

Guests will enter through the jaws of a Dunkleosteus – one of the most terrifying fishes of the Devonian period.

Everyone will be able to enjoy the new attraction, including those with disabilities and mobility issues.

The venue will also include a bar, gelato servery, party rooms and plenty of state-of-the art gaming machines.

It is the first major upgrade to the centre since Elanor Investors Group purchased it in 2017 for $55 million from private equity group Alceon.

Redcliffe Peninsula Chamber of Commerce president Brad Flynn said if approved it would be a boost for businesses in the area and tourism.

“That corner is just an amazing opportunity but has never had a business in there that has been able to smash it,” Mr Flynn said.

“It is fantastic, there will be local jobs that come out of it and smart businesses would be looking to partner with these guys.”

Mr Flynn said an attraction like this would give families even more reason to come and spend a day or weekend in Redcliffe.

“We have Aquasplash, Settlement Cove Lagoon, plenty of really good parks and playgrounds, the jumping pillow – people can really make a day or a weekend trip to Redcliffe,” he said.

“When we get people staying overnight we get more money into the community.”

If approved the developer hopes to do a soft opening in August and have it fully operational in time for the September school holidays – COVID-19 restrictions permitting.
