Target’s Kippa-Ring store has been confirmed as one of the 75 stores slated to be closed as part of Westfarmers' move to rebrand the struggling retail operation.
Westfarmers said 75 stores would close and others would be rebranded as Kmart.
With a Kmart located in the adjacent Peninsula Fair Shopping Centre the news the Kippa-Ring Target was closing did not take many by surprise.
Kippa-Ring Shopping Centre Manager Jennifer Spratling said they had been in close contact with Westfarmers in the lead up to the decision being made.
“We can confirm that the Target at Kippa-Ring will depart the centre in April 2021, providing us with a valuable opportunity to unlock retail space to enhance Kippa-Ring’s retail mix in line with our long-term masterplan,” Ms Spratling said.

The centre currently has a Woolworths, several clothing stores, eateries, beauty parlours, banks, BWS, newsagent, medical centre and Priceline Pharmacy.
Ms Spratling remained tight-lipped about what other retail venture might replace Target.
“Kippa Ring continues to experience strong demand for retail space, and as part of our active management approach, the significant 12-month time frame before Target departs allows us to get on with implementing our long-term strategic vision to deliver something special for the community,” she said.
“We remain firmly committed to ensuring our retail offer is strong, dynamic and convenient, and our team is hard at work to deliver experiences that keep up with the evolving needs of our community.
“At this stage it is still too early in our planning to discuss further details, but we look forward to sharing more information as our plans progress.”
Keen Target lovers will not have to travel far with the shops at Morayfield Shopping Centre and Bribie Island remaining as Targets.
A Target spokesman was not able to say how many staff would be affected by the closure of the Kippa-Ring store.
“During this difficult time, we are committed to supporting our team,” he said.
“Across the Kmart Group we have made a significant effort to avoid store closures and retain our people and for impacted store team members we have the benefit of time to help find alternative employment opportunities.
“All team members in Target stores scheduled for conversion to Kmart will be offered the opportunity to join the growing Kmart team, for other affected Target team members, we will work with them to identify and offer other redeployment opportunities in Kmart, Catch, Bunnings and Officeworks as these businesses continue to grow.”
