A $4 million upgrade of a suburban shopping centre has started, as it attempts to keep pace with major shopping centres nearby.

Peninsula Fair Shopping Centre, at Kippa-Ring, is just 15 minutes from Westfield North Lakes and 30 minutes from Westfield Chermside.

In a unique set-up, Peninsula Fair sits next to Kippa-Ring Shopping Centre, which had a major upgrade in 2013.

The two centres are connected by stairs and an outdoor travelator but managed by different companies.

Peninsula Fair and Kippa-Ring shopping centres, along with two other smaller centres and strip shops, service the Redcliffe Peninsula.

Peninsula Fair centre manager Kimai Breay said the upgrade was a strategic move to meet customers’ changing needs and wants.

The upgrade, which started this week, will include new external facades, new customer seating zones, improved access, revitalised interiors and upgraded amenities.

Mr Breay said it had been a while since any upgrades had been done at the centre, which has Kmart and Coles as its anchor tenants as well as a Hoyts Cinema and about 70 other retailers.

“The investment demonstrates confidence in the area and the revitalisation of the shopping centre will ensure Peninsula Fair continues to grow and strengthen in line with the changing demographics and expectations of the community,” Mr Breay said.

“We understand that our customers seek out a stress-free shopping experience and we aim to continue to provide that through free and easy parking, improved ease of access and a relaxed and comfortable environment in which to enjoy their shopping trip.”

Construction is expected to be completed by July 2017.

Mr Breay said the centre would remain open during construction.

He said it was too early to say if the growth of Westfield North Lakes had affected Peninsula Fair retailers.
