Driver sentenced after teen’s car spins out of control

The father who veered into oncoming traffic causing a car containing a 16-year-old girl to spin out of control and smash into a tree at Bellmere last year has been sentenced in court.

The man responsible for a shocking car crash which left a 16-year-old girl with serious injuries had been taking his son for a drink at a club.

Caboolture Magistrates Court heard the car David William Johns Oakroot, 40, was driving along Old North Road at Bellmere on September 24, 2019 veered into oncoming traffic.

It caused the car a the girl was travelling in to lose control and crash into a tree.

Reports at the time revealed the girl was trapped in the car for about an hour while emergency services worked to free her.

Magistrate Andrew Hackett said the car was “rotating down the highway until it struck a tree”.

The court heard the girl suffered a number of serious injuries including several fractures in her arm, a fractured pelvis, a dislocated shoulder and lacerations.

The court heard Oakroot had been taking his son to a sports club for a drink after his 18th birthday.

While Oakroot was not found to be affected by any substance at the time of horror crash, the court heard he had been struggling with a methylamphetamine addiction and had previous charges of drink driving.

Oakroot’s defence said he had been suffering around the time of the crash from a mix of trauma including a marriage breakdown, a previous car crash and the shock death of a friend in an industrial accident.

Oakroot pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention causing grievous bodily harm as well as a list unrelated charges including possessing cannabis, methylamphetamine, drug utensils and property suspected to be used in the commission of a drug offence.

He was placed on probation for 18 months and disqualified from driving for nine months.
