An ex-soldier who violently assaulted his pregnant partner has narrowly avoided jail time.

Matthew Glen Williams, 35, fronted Caboolture Magistrates Court today charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence).

Williams, who now works on a Bribie Island prawn trawler, pleaded guilty to punching his partner in the face when she woke him up accusing him of using drugs in March.

The court heard Williams — currently living in Currimundi — could be volatile when woken abruptly as a result of his time in the military, and so when his 15-week pregnant partner woke him up he struck her in the head.

The court then heard that when the woman blocked Williams from exiting the room, he punched her in the face.

When police arrived, the woman had a blood lip, swelling and bruising on her face and scratches on her right arm.

The violent scenes followed a January assault on the woman while the pair were on a boat at Sandstone Point.

The court heard he punched the woman in the face after she had brought Williams a customer.

The court heard Williams, who had previously been married for eight years where there were no issues of domestic violence, had started using methylamphetamine which had intensified his behaviour in what was described as a volatile more recent relationship.

He appeared before the court with no criminal history and having undertaken an anger management course.

He was sentenced to five months jail to be immediately suspended for each of the assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence) charges.

He also pleaded guilty to two contraventions of a domestic violence order linked to the assault occasioning bodily harm charges and was convicted and not further punished.

He was ordered to serve 15 months probation for a further contravention of a domestic violence order and breaching bail.
