Woman accused of torching car hangs head as bail denied

A southeast Queensland woman facing a massive list of charges including arson of a car has been denied bail by a magistrate today, despite having already been behind bars for seven months.

A Daisy Hill woman facing almost 60 charges including setting fire to a car has been denied bail today.

Sarah May Rebecca Whelan, 34, has been in jail for more than seven months while facing 59 charges including the alleged arson of a car, 15 counts of stealing, three counts of burglary, four counts of receiving tainted property and six counts of fraud.

She has also been accused of common assault, possessing dangerous drugs, breaching bail and failing to appear in court.

The court heard Whelan already had a significant criminal history and while she had already been in custody for seven months and nine days — having been arrested in February this year — she would likely serve even longer sentences in custody if convicted on the new raft of charges.

Whelan hung her head as she was denied bail via video link tody.

She will return to court on December 3.
