Benjamin Gino Peter Allanson, 21, pleaded guilty to drink driving at Caboolture Magistrates Court on Friday April 22, 2022.

He was fined for his offending and disqualified from driving for nearly a year.

The Sunshine Coast University finance and economics student, from Wamuran, was driving in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast March 20, 2022, when police pulled him over.

The court heard at 11.40pm police noticed Allanson had bloodshot eyes and smelt of liquor.

He was pulled over for a licence check.

Police conducted a random breath test and Allanson returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.212 – over four times the limit.

The court heard he was drinking at a mate’s place that night and made the ‘stupid decision’ to drive home.

Allanson’s lawyer said he was ‘out of control’ and had ‘a drinking problem’, especially when it came to spirits.

The court heard Allanson had a criminal history which included other alcohol-related offences.

According to his lawyer, Allanson was studying finance and economics at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

He also worked for his father as a farm hand, and had a limited traffic history.

Allanson was fined $1200 and disqualified from driving for 11 months. A conviction was recorded.
