It could be the ‘end of an era’ with a long loved north Brisbane Chinese restaurant to be replaced by a popular Mexican fast food chain.
A fast-growing Mexican fast food chain has submitted plans for yet another north Brisbane store and drive through, following three new Queensland stores already set to open in the next three months.
Now, the fast-food outlet has lodged a development application for a Guzman Y Gomez Restaurant with a drive through, located on the corner of 340 Wardell Street and 223 Samford Road, Enoggera.
The new Guzman y Gomez store would be going up where the iconic Brisbane Lotus Room Chinese Restaurant currently is. The redevelopment includes knocking this down.
Brisbane locals have taken to social media, sharing their shock.
State Labor MP for Pine Rivers, Nikki Boyd, said this was ‘the end of an intersection era’.
John Pitty said ‘please no’.
“We were there just last night for my fathers 77th birthday and he loved it,” he said.
“The food, the atmosphere, the surround. We hadn’t really been before and the staff were so accommodating.”
“Oh that’s so sad,” Angela Dix said.
“It’s been there as long as I can ever remember.”
The Lotus Room Chinese Restaurant has been contacted for comment.
Guzman y Gomez plans to rollout three new stores in Queensland in the next three months and more than 30 across the country by the end of the year.
GYG currently has 53 stores in Queensland and will open three new drive-through venues at Rochedale in Brisbane’s south and Morayfield and Warner in the Moreton Bay region.
Founder and chief executive Steven Marks, has previously been reported saying they plan to open about 30 restaurants a year in Australia to meet double digit annual growth which means new jobs.
“We have over 7500 employees globally and we are constantly hiring,” he said.
“With an average of 100 new crew for each restaurant opening, we expect to add another 1500 jobs before the end of this financial year.
“We want to be the biggest and best restaurant company in the world but we’re doing things properly and setting ourselves up for success now and in the long term.”
The new north Brisbane development application would be Brisbane’s 22nd store if approved, following the long-awaited opening of the Rochedale Guzmen Y Gomez.
Designed by Hodge Collard Preston Architects, the proposal seeks a stand alone food and drink outlet building that will establish a Guzman Y Gomez restaurant, outdoor dining area, and drive through.
The proposed building is set back from the intersection and retains the general location of the vehicle driveway and pedestrian connection from Wardell Street.
The redevelopment would remove the existing Lotus Room Chinese Restaurant, car park, driveway, and structures to facilitate the proposal. Using the adjoining vacant land, the large site will provide a vegetated layout that will include acoustic fencing along the boundaries.
