THERE are new plans to build a 15 storey unit development at a vacant waterfront block, which was once home to the iconic hotel where the Bee Gees played their first paid gig.

The Palace Hotel, which opened in 1902 at Woody Point, north of Brisbane, closed in July 2013.

It was the pub where Barry Gibb and his brothers played their first paid gigs as young boys.

Walker Corporation bought the site at 2 and 8 Gayundah Esplanade, from Kapergrove for $9.5 million.

Kapergrove had previously bought the property for $3.35 million in March 2002.

The Walker Corporation planned to build two residential towers and a tavern, on the site, which overlooks Bramble Bay and the Hornibrook Bridge.

The former hotel closed in July of 2013 and was knocked down in 2014 but no work was ever started on the development.

Core Logic data shows Nicolas Daoud & Co Pty Ltd, of Traders in Purple, purchased the site in August 2014 for just more than $5 million.

They lodged an application to amend their existing development permit on the site in April this year.

Their original plan, which is current until August 20, 2020, was to build a nine and 10 storey tower, with a total of 147 apartments and a restaurant.

They now plan to build, in two stages, eight townhouses and 149 residential apartments as well as a restaurant.

The residential towers will range between nine and 15 storeys, reaching 47m high.

Under the Moreton Bay Regional Council Planning Scheme the maximum height of a building is 12m.

Plans lodged with the council say there will be a total of 157 apartments, with a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms.

It stats the restaurant will include an outdoor terrace.

There is also proposed to be 314 car parks across two levels.

Traders in Purple director Charles Daoud said the new application reduced the proposed number of apartments by 17.

“We are committed to better urban outcomes and our dedicated team has worked to embrace the typography and challenges of the site to deliver a more positive result for our neighbouring properties, our customers and the community,” Mr Daoud said.

“The revised design honours the heritage of the site, the old Filmer’s Palace Hotel.

“A spacious restaurant/wine bar and outdoor seating area will be sited on the exact location and elevation of the previous Filmer’s Palace deck enjoying spectacular views over the water.”

If approved stage one will involve building the basement carparking and the north tower, which will include 77 apartments.

Stage two will built the south tower and the townhouses.

The townhouses are three storeys with four bedrooms and will include a courtyard and upper storey.

The development will also include a communal open space for residents and a pool.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is yet to make a decision on the development application.

Mr Daoud said if approved Traders in Purple hoped to start construction within the next 12 months.
