The Palace Hotel at Woody Point has closed, leaving only one old pub on the Redcliffe Peninsula

A QUEENSLAND town with one pub credited as the birthplace of the Bee Gees, and another once owned by an Origin legend, is struggling to keep pubs running. Find out why.

The Palace Hotel at Woody Point closed it doors on Tuesday, July 16, 2013.

THE Palace Hotel - the pub where Barry Gibb and his brothers played their first paid gigs as young boys - has closed its doors for good.

The hotel suffered a small fire in the kitchen on Wednesday, July 3 but reopened five days later.

Management confirmed today would be the last day for the pub, first built in 1902.

Manager Shane Cushway said the fire was probably "the straw that broke the camel's back''.

While staff were still in shock, Mr Cushway said many had already been offered jobs at Redcliffe RSL and other venues.

It's a blow for the small Peninsula of Redcliffe, which has already seen its other three historic pubs close in the past few years.

The Seabrae Hotel, where Mon Komo now stands, was opened in 1960 and changed its name to the Redcliffe Hotel in 1979.

It closed in 2008 to make way for the current highrise bar and apartment complex.

The Scarborough Hotel was first built in 1879 but has sat deserted and deteriorating since it closed in 2009. The land was bought earlier this year, but there are still no plans for the old watering hole overlooking the water.

The Moreton Bay Hotel, once owned by rugby league legend Arthur Beetson, was the most recent one to shut up shop, closing over the Australia Day long weekend this year. The pub known most recently as The Bayview is still empty.

The last of the old pubs is The Belvedere Hotel at Woody Point. The Belvedere was first built in the 1890s as a boarding house and converted to a pub in 1907.
