Flagstone State Community College parents reveal how school allegedly keeps ‘fight club’ culture a secret

A Logan school has denied parents’ claims it is trying to keep its ‘fight club’ culture a secret by instructing students not to tell anyone.

A school caught up in controversy over a ‘fight club culture’ has allegedly issued instructions not to reveal the on-campus violence to their parents, according to students.

However a spokesman for the department of education said these claims were false.

Flagstone State Community College has just this year gained a reputation for its ‘fight club’ culture – after videos depicting students bashing each other on school grounds in school uniform surfaced online in June.

What followed has been a series of claims about violence on school grounds, much of it caught on film.

In response to concerns of violence, local police upped patrols around the school.

The alleged violence, swearing and anti-social behaviour hasn’t just been confined to school grounds though. Two weeks ago the school made the news when local parents claimed Flagstone Community State College students were terrorising younger children at a local park.

Just last week news broke of a 12-year-old girl allegedly being circled and whipped by a group of 20 boys at lunch time on Thursday October 13. Her mother shared a photo of her legs covered in marks after the incident, saying she was furious the school did not call her the day of.

The Department of Education however said the claim about her not being contacted on the day of the incident was false and confirmed the incident and a spokesman said the boys were being dealt with accordingly.

Now, parents have revealed what the school has allegedly been telling its students to prevent word from getting out.

“My child said that he’s been at two assemblies and been told that ... it’s a school matter not a home matter,” another parent said.

“What a f***ing joke,” a parent said.

One mother alleged she witnessed a school staff member yelling at her daughter.

“The staff member was disrespectful to me and yelling at my daughter in a separate room for contacting me asking to be picked up,” she said.

“The staff member said to her ‘don’t call your mother we don’t want parents here’.

“I heard it all then the staff member accused me of videotaping them because I had my phone in my hand and said they didn’t give me permission…I never was trying to videotape her but told her she has a duty of care to provide a secure environment for my daughter to learn in.

“I had contacted the department of education regarding all issues with the school also.”

A parent has also alleged that her son was the only one of the group of 20 boys to be suspended following the incident from Thursday.

She said it was concerning because in the past year his attendance had dropped from 99 per cent to 32 per cent.

A spokesman for the department of education denied all claims about students being told not to tell their parents about fights at school.

“The claims that Flagstone State Community College advises students not to report bullying or violence taking place on school grounds are false. Students are encouraged to report concerns or issues to an appropriate adult at the school immediately,” they said.

“Flagstone State Community College places the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of all students, and incidents are investigated and responded to, in accordance with the school’s Student Code of Conduct.

“The incident which occurred last Thursday has been investigated and responded to, in accordance with the school’s Student Code of Conduct. The parents of all students involved were immediately contacted when staff were made aware of the

incident and are supportive of the actions the College has taken.

“The majority of school-based behaviour issues are able to be resolved without police involvement. Depending on the situation and assessment of risk, principals may determine it is necessary to contact the Queensland Police Service to seek further assistance or report a serious incident.”
