Parents are fearing for their children’s safety after a fight at school pick up yesterday south of Brisbane allegedly saw up to ‘five students expelled’ and ‘at least one teacher assaulted’.
According to parents, Flagstone State Community College was known for physical bullying and an Instagram page depicting videos of students fighting each other in school uniforms has surfaced.
Numerous parents have alleged that a physical fight broke out between Year 9 students at school pick-up yesterday afternoon, June 1, 2022.
Police have confirmed this, however said a teacher from Flagstone State Community College broke up the fight so police were not involved.
One parent said she was concerned for her 14-year-old child’s safety, after hearing about the fight.
“At least five children in Year 9 have been expelled and at least one teacher physically and verbally assaulted,” the parent said.
“I have had many issues with bullying and the way this school has handled it, and have had to go to Education Queensland on one occasion.
“The school previously has handled this kind of thing by essentially locking the school down. Each grade has their breaks in the same area supervised by a teacher and cannot leave, must ask to use the bathroom.”
The parent said her children told her even more fights broke out at Flagstone State Community College today, June 2, 2022.
“There has been many talks to the kids by teachers today. And more fights,” she said.
“I’m told six fights in the last two days. I was on the phone with my daughter (today, June 2, 2022) and one broke out next to her.”
Another parent alleges four suspended students had dropped by at school pick-up and that they started the fight yesterday.
“One of the kids that is currently suspended was the aggressor. As soon as it got physical all the other students jumped in,” she said.
“It was an all in brawl…involving at least 30 kids.”
According to parents there was a school assembly today where students were told four students had been expelled because of yesterday’s fight because ‘a teacher was assaulted’.
An Education Queensland spokesperson said they could not confirm whether any students had been expelled due to privacy reasons however said no teachers were harmed as a result of the school pick-up incident.
“My son said there is at least one fight daily either in school or around school grounds,” another parent said.
“The kids apparently form a circle and two kids are placed in the middle to punch on quickly.”
Another parent said her two children came home terrified yesterday after the fight.
“My boys were there (when the fight broke out) and came home terrified and telling me it happens all the time,” she said.
“This is not the first time this has happened. Unfortunately I’m told it’s a regular occurrence.
“It’s quite a mess there at the moment. I do feel for the staff but they definitely need to advocate more for change.”
Parents from the school, fed up with the fighting and bullying, have taken to Facebook community groups saying students should be able to attend school without being assaulted by other students.
“Apparently the Grade 11s and 12s were told today, by the Deputy Principal that if they see a fight then they have permission to try and break up the fight,” a parent said regarding students previously getting in trouble for trying to break up fights.
Another parent said the school is so well known for students fighting in uniform that there is even an Instagram page dedicated to sharing videos of the fights.
“I know of an Instagram page that has multiple videos of students in Flagstone State Community College uniforms physically fighting each other,” she said.
“Both in and out of school grounds.”
An Education Queensland spokesperson said the department was aware of an ‘incident which occurred yesterday, after school hours, at Flagstone State Community College’.
“The students involved in the incident were not actively attending school that day as a result of previous disciplinary measures,” they said.
“School staff intervened promptly and the young persons were escorted off the school property. No staff members were harmed during the incident.
“Further disciplinary consequences have been applied in line with the schools’ Student Code of Conduct.
“Violence and anti-social behaviours are not tolerated in Queensland state schools and any situation that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students, staff or others in our school communities is treated extremely seriously, and dealt with as a matter of priority.”
