A Brisbane man was lured to a quiet spot in the city’s southwest to sell his laptop on Gumtree before he was set upon by four men, a type of crime police say is happening more often.

A 28-year-old Brisbane man was lured to a quiet location in the city’s southwest on the pretext of selling his laptop via Gumtree, but was set upon by four men and “kicked in the head” as his device was stolen.

Police say the Toowong man travelled to Dunleath St, Durack at 6.30pm last night to meet an interested buyer.

The victim attended the address and was approached while he was sitting in his car by two men.

He got out of his car and showed them the laptop, at which point one of the men snatched the device and ran away.

Inala Police Station OIC Craig MacKenzie said the “victim grabbed the second offender and wrestled with him when the first offender returned and kicked him in the head”.

“Subsequently two other offenders appeared and joined in assaulting the victim,” he said.

“All offenders decamped, leaving the victim with multiple abrasions and contusions to the head.”

Snr Sgt MacKenzie said this particular modus operandi has become “quite prevalent in recent times”.

“Police have seen a number of robberies in recent times where offenders have used Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace to lure victims to meetings – often on quiet streets and in park areas – only to ambush them and steal their property,” he said.

“The public need to be very wary if a potential buyer tries to organise a meeting in some obscure public place.”

The offenders remain at large and police are looking for public help in locating the offenders, who are described as being of African appearance.
