The survivor of a horror two vehicle crash in the Whitsundays is in a “serious but stable” condition as police urge witnesses to come forward.
A 67-year-old Dingo Beach man, the driver and sole occupant of a Nissan X Trail, died at the scene following a collision with a Mitsubishi Triton along Strathdickie Rd in Strathdickie near Airlie Beach about 6.30pm Sunday.
An RACQ CQ Rescue service crew flew the driver and sole occupant of the ute, a 43-year-old Riordanvale woman, to Townsville Hospital for treatment of spinal injuries.
The X Trail had significant damage to its front end while the ute’s canopy was upside down on the vehicle’s roof.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were appealing to anyone with information or vision to come forward to help the investigation.
The incident – the fifth road fatality in the Whitsunday region within the past six weeks, and sixth across the Mackay policing district since July 1 – happened just hours before the kick off of Queensland Road Safety Week.
“Any death on our roads is tragic and affects many family and friends of those killed as well as emergency services personnel who attend,” a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.
“These are often difficult and confronting scenes for police to attend and we make sure that we check on the welfare of our offices to ensure their wellbeing.
“As part of this (Road Safety Week) campaign, we ask the community to join with us and drive to the road rules and conditions, be aware of your surroundings and other drivers and most of all be patient and considerate of other road users.
“Whitsunday, Proserpine and Mackay Police will have increased targeted traffic operations and enforcement along with education as part of the week.”
There have been 11 road fatalities across the Mackay policing district so far this year.
On August 10 a 74-year-old Strathdickie man died when his red Holden ute veered into a truck with a semi-trailer along the Bruce Highway at Proserpine near the Glen Isla Rd turn-off about 8.30pm.
On July 19 24-year-old Gregory River man Oscar Jensen died when his Toyota LandCruiser ute rolled five times on Dingo Beach Rd just before 6.30pm.
On July 11 50-year-old Bentley Parsgaard, who was a passenger in a ute, died when the car he was travelling in collided with a coal train at crossing 3285 on Peter Delemothe Road, west of Bowen about 9pm.
The train pierced the ute the men were travelling in, dragging the vehicle about 600m down the tracks.
Earlier that same day, just after 7am, Gavin Hussey, 47, died when the Mitsubishi Lancer he was driving collided with a cement truck at a bend in the roadway on Shute Harbour Rd near Myrtle Creek.
The crash blocked the major thoroughfare from Cannonvale to Proserpine for four hours.
