Severe thunderstorms, temperature spike forecast for Queensland

Parts of Queensland sweltered on Monday with maximums hitting close to 40C.

Two crucial factors involved in declaring a third La Nina

Potentially severe thunderstorms and 40C temperatures have been forecast for parts of the state, while Brisbane is set for days of sunshine in a “mixed bag” of weather.

The weather bureau has warned residents in Charters Towers, Central Highlands, Rockhampton and Bundaberg regions for potentially severe thunderstorms on Monday.

It had hit 37.8C at both Julia Creek in the north west region and Century Mine in Gulf Country about 1.30pm.

Also out west, Palmerville, Weipa, Kowanyama, Camooweal and Urandangi all hit over 37C Monday afternoon.

In the South East, the warmest location was at Greenbank with 29.9C as well as Beerburrum where it was 29.6C.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall had started to move across the northern coast by 2pm, with 15.8mm falling in Rockhampton since 9am Monday. The rain band appeared to be moving east about 2pm, covering isolated patches from Dysart to Bundaberg.

Forecaster Steven Hadley had earlier said a slow-moving trough had the potential to contain large hail, damaging winds and heavy bursts of rain.

He said while most of the activity was predicted for Charters Towers, it could be felt as far south as the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Hadley said the northwest corners of the state were set to hit 40C, temperatures about 5-6C above the September averages.

Mr Hadley said the likes of Doomadgee, Julia Creek and Richmond had maximum temperatures of 40C for Monday.

“It’s not heatwave potential but it’s very hot for this time of year,” Mr Hadley said.

“It’s also the first 40C temperatures since the summer. So very hot.”

Maximum Brisbane temperatures are set to hover around the 29C mark for the start of this week.

Mr Hadley said a trough could move across the southern parts of the state from the west with potential for showers and storm activity.
