A Downs man who brandished a samurai sword in the company of his terrified elderly mother has appeared in court.

The court heard the man, who is the carer for his “elderly and frail” mother, scared her with the weapon while under the influence of ice in March.

Following an argument with his partner over the phone, he threatened self-harm while holding the sword, scaring his mother.

The man was “very stressed from moving”, the court heard, and he had previously used methamphetamine to relieve stress.

The man pleaded guilty to contravening a domestic violence order in Warwick Magistrates Court, after prosecutors dropped a charge of threatening violence.

‘It’s obvious that she (your mother) was quite distressed and that she felt quite scared by, without suggesting you were threatening her, but she felt scared because of your behaviour,” Magistrate Janice Crawford said.

The man was sentenced to four months in jail, and given immediate parole eligibility after 106 days in custody were declared time served.

The man is currently serving a prison term on unrelated matters and will be released on July 23.
