Friend Jake Kirkham told The Courier-Mail he had caught up with Joshua just hours before his death.
“Josh didn’t deserve this and nobody does. I wish he could still be here today because he had never realised how many people love and care about him,” he said.
“Josh was an amazing human. I loved that kid and I forever will.”
Another friend, Rhygin Pukeroa, said Joshua was always on the lookout for others.
“He was really chill, he was the type of mate that would stand up for you. He loved hanging out with all of us boys he had a kind heart and it was really sad that he has passed away,” he said.
“He was real funny, he knew how to make someone laugh and he had a really good laugh and great smile. He was a really good boy he just started hanging with the wrong people that got him in trouble but he was a really good friend.”
Joshua was from Stafford and had previously attended Prince of Peace Lutheran College at Everton Park.
Tributes poured in for the teenager on social media.
“I’m so sorry Josh. I met you a couple times and seeing your cheeky smile and laugh was so refreshing. You will not be forgotten, thank you for giving me laughter in those moments. We miss you ,” Ellen McGovern-Greco said on Facebook.
“Rest in peace Josh Gray, you will be missed by literally everyone. You were a good lad,” Lewis Dennent said.
Kalaini William Wilkes said she couldn’t believe her friend was gone.
“Rest easy Joshy. We had good times and a few bad but I’ll always remember how you always had a smile on your face and was always happy to be around me and the boys you will be missed.”
The 15-year-old driver has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.
