Construction is underway on a “contemporary” extension and refurbishment of an aged-care facility in Woombye, complete with a new kitchen, dining and lounge.

The major project taking place at Woombye Care has been designed by Covey Associates and is being constructed by Murphy Builders.

A Covey spokesperson said the first stage of the project included a 10-bedroom extension along with the refurbishment of two existing suites, and is expected to be completed in November.

The second stage is due for completion in June 2022 and features a new kitchen, dining, lounge, balcony areas, two new bedrooms and the complete demolition and replacement of 10 existing bedrooms.

“The new extension has been designed to provide the new rooms with expansive views of the surrounding natural setting,” the spokesperson said.

The building has been designed to complement the existing structures in the facility, the spokesperson told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

“It is contemporary with high ceilings and clerestory windows in the common area to allow natural light and ventilation,” they said.

“There are quality natural finishes such as Tasmanian oak throughout.”

Privacy, safety and security are just some of the considerations that have been made by the design team with the elderly residents in mind.

“Lifestyle, flexibility and accessibility is important for the residents with varying levels of care needs,” the spokesperson said.

“The design will most importantly endeavour to make the residents feel comfortable and at home.”

All rooms will be provided with the latest patient care facilities such as built-in movement assistance, nurse call technology and WI-FI systems.

Sustainability has been prioritised in the design through the addition of solar panels, high levels of building insulation and on-site water supply.

“The main residential level is above a large carparking area at ground level which also has another sub-level of rainwater tanks which provide 700KL of treated water for the facility,” the spokesperson said.

“There is also a new hot water plant area and upgrade to some of the older existing facilities’ hot water services.”

The Covey spokesperson said the project was progressing well considering the challenges of the pandemic and building supply shortages.

“The builder, Murphy Builders, is doing an excellent job,” they said.
