The tenant who has lived in an “iconic” beach shack overlooking Alexandra Headland’s coastline for more than three decades has shared his reaction to news his home may be demolished for a new unit block.
Plans for a four-storey apartment complex were lodged following the recent sale of 250 Alexandra Pde - known as Bunya Bunya - to Sunshine Coast-based developers.
The shack is one of the last of its kind along the beachfront.
Tenant Allan Clarke, affectionately known as Clarkie, has lived in the home for 32 years and spends plenty of time enjoying the view from the front porch.
He said while he knew the shack would eventually be developed, he was concerned about having to find a new rental.
“It’s a shocking time for renters … but that’s the world,” he said.
“I’ll probably go into a retirement village.”
He said he, along with everyone else who had come to recognise the beach shack, would be sad to see it go.
In his time living at Bunya Bunya, Clarkie said he had seen changes in traffic and pedestrian density along Alexandra Headland, but found an increase in coffee shops particularly surprising.
“They never used to exist, now you can’t go more than 20 metres without falling into one,” he said.
Sunshine Coast-based development company NeuBau Group lodged an application with Sunshine Coast Council to build four spacious four-bedroom units.
The three-bedroom home was owned by the same family since the late 1960s until it went under contract in a private deal in early July.
NeuBau Group director Tim Reed confirmed NeuBau Group Pty Ltd were the buyers of the property, but were yet to reach settlement.
The settlement date is August 18, he said, but would not confirm a sale price.
Development documents state the building will have one apartment per storey and will not exceed the height limit of 12 metres.
The property, on a 911 sqm block, is one of the last remaining properties on the Alexandra Headland beachfront that is not a block of units.
Mr Reed said he was excited he was able to secure “such an iconic Sunshine Coast property”.
“We want to produce a truly beautiful product for a truly beautiful location and we believe our development proposal will do this,” he said.
The application states the complex will be built with quality materials and finishes for a “premium built form” that will be “consistent with the beachside character” of Alexandra Headland.
Mr Reed said the tenant at the property, who had been there for 32 years, was aware of the sale and potential development.
“I have visited the tenant since going to contract to discuss our intentions,” Mr Reed said, adding the tenant “always knew” or “expected” the site would be developed.
“He is a good bloke and is well known to the community and locals, he actually taught my mother, aunties and uncles at Maroochy State School.”
Mr Reed said if approved, the development could be completed by Christmas, 2024.
This is NeuBau’s latest project, after it proposed a private day hospital and food and drink outlets for the heart of Sippy Downs and a new Coles supermarket for Palmwoods.
