A fire which destroyed a family home in Mooloolaba has been ruled non suspicious.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency spokesman said the investigation into what caused the blaze had closed, with the fire deemed to have been “accidentally lit”.
The fire broke out about 5.30pm on the corner of Coppabella Cres and Amarina Ave on Saturday, August 5.
Family members said on Saturday night they were forced to run for their lives as flames engulfed their home.
A grandma, who did not want to be named, told this publication the fire had started near the garage.
The family tried to extinguish the flames with garden hoses but even with the help of a neighbour with his own hose, it was no use.
“It happened so fast,” she said.
“We just ran.”
The woman said there was a lot of smoke inside the property before they evacuated, and they did not know what caused the blaze.
She said seven people were living there, including several children, one of whom was able to raise the alarm with emergency services.
He claimed the operator first questioned whether it was a prank call.
“When I called the fire department, they were like ‘if this is a prank, please hand it to someone if it’s a real fire’,” he said, adding that when he handed the phone to someone older, the operator believed him.”
Neighbour Dave Allen said he heard “popping noises” before finding the house engulfed in flames.
“I came out the front door, had a look outside and there’s all flames coming out where the garage is, there’s all flames coming out where the window was (sic),” he said.
Everyone was out of the house by the time he saw the blaze, he said.
Emergency services blocked off parts of Amarina Ave in Mooloolaba on Saturday evening as they worked to contain the blaze, which destroyed the one-storey home.
Smoke could be seen coming off the roofing tiles after the fire was extinguished.
Investigations are continuing.
