Jye Robert Wakeman fined for huge burnout in Little Mountain

A Sunshine Coast tradie who performed a burnout for 30m while being egged on by nearby drivers did so because the closest car tracks were in Brisbane.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

A Buderim tradie’s lawyer has told a court his 27-year-old client’s love for cars and a lack of race tracks was the reason why he ripped a huge skid in Little Mountain.

Jye Robert Wakeman was fined in Caloundra Magistrates Court on Wednesday July 27, 2022 after he created a huge billow of smoke during a burnout along Latcham Dr.

The court was told that a police officer discovered a large two line burnout on the ground on his way to work about 8.25pm on February 13, 2022.

Police prosecutor Amanda Brewer said CCTV footage from the BP service station nearby showed Wakeman spinning the back wheels of his Holden Commodore.

Plumes of black smoke emanated from his rear tyres as he drifted for 30m until he drove away along Caloundra Rd.

Sergeant Brewer said a nearby car at the Night Owl was seen flashing their lights on the video.

The court heard police later attended a Pelican Waters home for another matter when they spoke to Wakeman.

He denied performing the burnout without a licence until officers showed him footage.

Defence lawyer Bruce Johnston said the car flashing its light wasn’t in immediate danger and believed they were egging Wakeman on.

Mr Johnston said Wakeman and his mates used to have a club car track on the Sunshine Coast but now the closest one was in Brisbane.

“Young men love their cars, it’s part of our society … they want to let off steam,” he said.

Wakeman pleaded guilty to two counts of driving unlicensed, driving without due care and making unnecessary smoke and was fined $1650.

He was then disqualified for three months with convictions recorded.
