Baringa alleged stabbing death: Man found dead by police on Sunshine Coast

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and is due to face court over the alleged stabbing murder of a man in a Sunshine Coast home overnight as more details surface.

Suspicious stabbing death at Baringa began with "physical altercation", police allege

A boy, 16, has been charged with murder after the alleged stabbing death of a man in a suburban Sunshine Coast home on Wednesday night.

The boy, who was known to the 42-year-old Sunshine Coast man who died from his injuries at the scene, is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Police sources have revealed the motive remained a mystery as the 16-year-old boy had exercised his right to remain silent.

It’s understood it will take forensic police officers days to examine the crime scene with the 42-year-old man’s body still inside the home as of mid-afternoon on Thursday.

Residents on Thursday morning recalled hearing screams pierce the night before a man was allegedly stabbed to death by a teenage boy inside a Toyne St, Baringa home just before midnight Wednesday.

Police will allege an altercation turned physical before a 42-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by a teenage boy.

Sunshine Coast Crime Group Acting Inspector Philip Hurst said Thursday the man was stabbed following a “physical altercation” at a rental property in Toyne St, Baringa, just before midnight Wednesday.

Sergeant Hurst said a woman and two teenagers, including a 16-year-old boy assisting police with their investigation, were found inside the property and had been living there for about six months.

Neighbours in Toyne St were shocked to hear the grisly death happened in what was a quiet, family street.

A nearby resident told the Sunshine Coast Daily she heard “yelling and screaming” in the middle of the night between a woman and a man.

Toyne St resident Chris Tindall said it was a “pretty wild” incident to happen on his street, especially having a young family.

Queensland Police are yet to speak to everyone involved but Sergeant Hurst said there was no threat to the community.

Sergeant Hurst confirmed the deceased was an associate of the 16-year-old’s mother, but that the teenager was not a stepson.

Five Queensland Ambulance Service crews, including critical care paramedics, rushed to the Toyne Street home about midnight where the 42-year-old Sunshine Coast man was found with apparent stab wounds.

He died from his injuries at the scene.

A crime scene was quickly established thereafter.

It is understood the man was a Sunshine Coast resident.

One resident saw a teenager being brought out of the Toyne St home in the morning with his hands covered up before being put into a police van.

Another neighbour said they were shook up enough from the murder-suicide of Sunshine Coast woman Sonja Kovacevic, 48, and Browns Plains man Barry Houston, 52 in a Caloundra West home on March 21, 2022, only five minutes away from Toyne St.

One neighbour said he felt as though the areas of Baringa, Nirimba and Caloundra West had experienced an increasing crime rate in recent years.

“I’m from Logan and I’m even like ‘wow, even that’s pretty bad’ … break-ins here especially with people walking the streets,” he said.

Another neighbour said the occupants of the home where the crime scene was declared had been living in Toyne St for less than six months.

“They haven’t been there long and kept to themselves,” she said.

“There have been quite a few tenants coming and going from that residence lately.”

The woman said she didn’t even know there were dogs residing at the property until police asked her if she could care for them while the woman and 16-year-old were assisting with inquiries.

“It’s comforting to know it wasn’t a random act though so I don’t feel under any distress that way but I’ve got kids and have always felt safe in our neighbourhood,” she said.

“We’ve just been asked by the police to put their dogs in our yard and I didn’t even know they had dogs.”

The incident happened just before the birthday of late Buddina teen Balin Stewart who was allegedly stabbed to death outside his Iluka Ave home on January 20, 2022.

The community is preparing to honour the much-loved teen who was born on September 8 with a festival at NightQuarter on Friday, September 9, as a major birthday bash remembering his life.

Investigations are ongoing.

Updates to come.
