Kingaroy twin sisters have faced court for repeatedly punching a girl known as their “high school rival” until her vision became impaired.

Lilly Jade Barratt-Coates, 19, and Ruby Rose Barratt-Coates, 19, both pleaded guilty to assaults occasioning bodily harm.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said the attack occurred on December 4, 2022, at 2.50am at the Kingaroy McDonalds restaurant.

“They all knew each other from high school; the complainant had been verbally abused by Ruby who said ‘walk you scum dog’,” Sergeant Stevens said.

The court heard the victim walked to the self serve counter where she was hit in the back of the head by Lilly.

Sgt Stevens said Lily then approached the victim and punched her in the left side of her face before pulling her hair and pushing her to the ground.

“Multiple patrons intervened and as the defendant stood up Ruby punched her,” the court heard.

“Ruby and Lilly both declined to be interviewed by police.”

The victim was hospitalised and assessed for injuries to her left eye after she reported feeling sharp pains, the court was told.

Defence lawyer Colin Murray said this had been an ongoing rivalry for six years, during their high school years.

“They were continuously subjected to bullying from the complainant,” Mr Murray said.

The court heard that on the night of the McDonald’s incident the complainant had been shouting derogatory terms at Lilly, before the situation escalated.

“Lily and Ruby decided they would not allow the complainant’s behaviour to stop them from going to McDonalds, but as they entered the car park the abuse from the complainant escalated,” Mr Murray said.

As the twins entered the restaurant the complainant was standing with an entourage of about five other men, the court was told.

Mr Murray said Lilly approached the complainant, who was hurling abuse at her, and threw a punch at her.

“Lilly instructs me that her punch missed and it is uncertain if the red swelling on the complainant’s face was caused by Lilly hitting her,” he told the court.

Sgt Stevens objected to Mr Murray not accepting the agreed fact that the first punch was by Lilly.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said the case needed to be set down for a contested sentence with the CCTV footage to be watched.

Both women will be required to appear before the court on June 1, 2023, for a contested sentence.

Bail was enlarged.
