Moondooner man caught speeding fined $1780, loses licence

A police officer’s plea to a 19-year-old Moondooner man caught at more than 70kmh over the speed limit along the Bunya Highway has been caught on bodycam after pulling the man over.

A 19-year-old Moondooner man was caught speeding more than 70km over the speed limit along the Bunya Hwy and given a hefty fine along with losing his licence for six months.

Senior Constable Nick Schmidt said about 9.50am on Monday, March 4, Murgon police officers intercepted a Blue Holden Cruze on the Bunya Hwy.

Police allege the 19-year old Moondooner driver was speeding at 172km/h in a 100km/h zone.

When the police officer on the scene, Constable Matthew Burrows, spoke to the man and read his speed he asked “do you realise how ridiculous that is? It is insane”.

“Do you know how dangerous that is? Do you know how easy it is to be killed?” Const Burrows asked the man.

“One slight move and you’re crushed, you’re gone, you’re dead.

“I have a good feeling, if I didn’t pull you over I’d be coming to a car crash with you today.

“That is insane, 172, I’ve never heard that before.”

Before leaving, Const Burrows pleaded with the man to stop speeding.

“Please slow down, I don’t want to come to a car crash and picking a dead body up OK,” he said.

The Moondooner man was fined $1780.

He also lost eight demerit points and his licence will be suspended for six months.

Const Burrows said at that speed it only took “one small thing to go wrong” for a disaster to result.

“I hope the young man reflects on his decisions during his six -month disqualification period and becomes a safer driver as a result of it,” Const Burrows said.
