Jammie Michael Stanley in court for defacing ballot paper

A disgruntled Queensland voter left some nasty messages on his ballot paper during the state election.

A 41-year-old Ballogie man who wrote a rude message on a mail-in ballot paper for the state election last year has been placed on a good behaviour bond.

Jammie Michael Stanley pleaded guilty in the Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Friday to one count of defacing a ballot paper.

The court heard Mr Stanley was on disability after suffering a workplace injury about 10 years ago which left him with chronic pain, and at the time of the incident was drinking 14 to 16 beers a day to deal with this.

He thought it would be “funny” to express his dissatisfaction by defacing the mail-in ballot paper by writing “I hope you c**** get cancer, f*** you. F*** you clowns, hope you all get cancer”.

His lawyer said her client knew he had “acted stupidly” and it was “idiotic behaviour”, and that he admitted to writing the note when questioned by police.

The court heard Mr Stanley had no criminal history.

His lawyer said the incident was particularly unfortunate as Mr Stanley and his family did a great deal of community work.

This included making custom lures and selling them to fundraise for a variety of charities, including one that was cancer related.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair sentenced Mr Stanley to a 12 month good behaviour bond.
