Ashley Lance Smallwood charged with assault after alleged footy brawl

New details in the case against a talented rugby league player, who faces multiple assault charges stemming from an alleged brawl at a Qld grand final game, can be revealed.

The case against a man charged over his alleged role in a brawl at a South Burnett rugby league grand final has been heard in Kingaroy District Court.

Ashley Lance Smallwood, 38, faces three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of common assault.

The alleged altercation occurred on September 2, 2023 at TJ O’Niell Oval in Kingaroy, after the Kingaroy Red Ants beat the Cherbourg Hornets.

Mr Smallwood, who was a member of the Nanango Stags A-grade rugby league team up until 2022, is taking his charges to trial.

He did not appear in court this week and was represented by his lawyer, Mandy Reid.

The court heard up to 22 witnesses would be called to give evidence at the trial.

The case was adjourned until March 31.

No please have been entered and Mr Smallwood remains on bail.
