A self-proclaimed “workaholic” and construction surveyor said he hoped to use his skills and work ethic if elected to the South Burnett Council on March 16, however, his online activity has raised some eyebrows.
Gerald Daly is running for Division 4 of the council and spoke at the recent Chamber of Commerce candidate’s forum, telling the audience he understood the workings of council and believed he could make a change.
“The only way to make a difference is to actually be on the inside,” Mr Daly said.
He said his background was in construction surveying and that he planned to use those skills if elected into council.
“I check and double check everything,” he said.
At the Nanango forum last week Mr Daly expressed concern about the condition of roads in the South Burnett.
“Previous councils have come through, they’ve put a bit of gravel down, put a little bit of bitumen on top … the point is, it’s done as a political stunt,” he said.
He said there had been a “big improvement” when it came to repairing roads but that he did not believe they were doing a thorough enough job for a long-term fix.
His own “biggest problem”, he told the forum, was being a workaholic.
“My record is five months, seven days a week, 12 hours a day, flat out,” he said.
“If I get involved, become a councillor, you’ll expect to see me everywhere.”
Although Mr Daly did not speak about causes he supported, his posts to various community groups on Facebook have raised some eyebrows.
In December 2023, he posted photos in the Facebook group South Burnett Community Awareness Group of signs he said he helped organise.
“Our first roadside poster placement thanks to the owner … for their assistance,” he wrote.
The signs appear to support anti-government views, anti-renewables and one sign which appeared to link vaccines to autism.
The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care states that vaccines don’t cause autism.
“Scientific studies and reviews continue to show no relationship between vaccines and autism,” the department said.
Mr Daly has also posted online his opposition to 5G and some renewable energy technology.
The South Burnett Times has endeavoured to contact Mr Daly for comment.
The South Burnett Regional Council election is on March 16, 2024.
