A man who was due to enter a plea on Tuesday after he allegedly rammed a police car was taken to hospital moments before proceedings were due to begin.

Dion Eugene Bergin was charged with four breaches of bail, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evasion, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected and driving over the general alcohol limit.

Police allege the 58-year-old Murgon man failed to stop his car while on Kerbs St about 9am on December 21, 2023.

They said Mr Bergin allegedly “rammed an unmarked police vehicle”.

Two women officers were reportedly treated for minor injuries.

On Tuesday, Mr Bergin was due to appear via video link at the Murgon Magistrates Court from the Maryborough Correctional Centre but shortly before proceedings were due to proceed, news had come through he had been taken to the Maryborough Hospital.

“The court was informed about 14 minutes ago,” Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said.

Mr Bergin’s lawyer, Jay Rose, said Mr Begin was “significantly deteriorating” in prison when she spoke to his carer only five days earlier.

“He’s apparently not capable of looking after himself and needs a carer in prison, he’s lost all bodily functions,” she said.

Ms Rose said Mr Bergin had “significant injuries” from the incident he is charged for.

She said he had “significant mental health issues” and also suffered from “severe alcoholism”.

Ms Rose said her submission would have been to ask that Mr Bergin be released from custody that day and asked the court to consider an early date for the next appearance.

Mr Sinclair said Mr Bergin would remain in custody and was next scheduled to appear on April 23 via video link.
