Coach Ryan Sullivan says the Burnett Brahmans did the South Burnett proud after the team won the Plate Final at the 47th Battalion Carnival in Emerald on the Labour Day weekend.

The Brahmans, made up of players from the Kingaroy Ants, Wondai Wolves, Cherbourg Hornets and the Murgon Mustangs, defeated the Central Highlands 22-18 to win the Plate Final after a weekend of hard graft from the players.

“The boys really dug in,” Sullivan said.

“We were down to 15 fit players with three or four wounded and some who probably should not have been out there in the final, so it was a great effort from the team.

“The team was the Wide Bay Rangers last year and we lost in the plate final with players from Central and South Burnett plus the Northern Districts Rugby League.

“This year it was supposed to be players from Central and South Burnett but with Nanango folding, we just had players from the South Burnett, which makes it an even greater feat.

“Last year we didn’t even have team jerseys but this year we had sponsors and we looked like a team.”

The Brahmans lost to the Sunshine Coast Falcons in their first game in Emerald 28-10 but Sullivan, who is also coach of the Red Ants, said the game was closer than the scoreline suggested.

“We had our chances,” he said.

“We probably bombed a couple of tries and it could have been tighter.”

The Brahmans were also behind 16-6 to the South West Stockmen, who the Rangers lost to in last year’s plate final, in their next game but came back to win 22-16.

The team was also losing 18-12 at the break in the Plate Final to the Central Highlands, coached by former Manly and Melbourne Storm star Steve Bell, but put in a solid second-half display to run out 18-12 winners.

“They were a well-drilled side,” Sullivan said.

“We let them into the game, however, by giving away silly penalties and they went 12-0 up.

“We were the better team and fought back well to win the game.

“I am proud of the team over the weekend in how they performed.”

Sullivan said all his side deserved praise but picked out five players who stood out most in Emerald.

Five star Brahmans players

George Fisher

“George was our halfback and was superb all weekend.

“He produced some magic on occasions and he scored three tries and kicked three conversions in the Plate Final.”

Vincent Laws

“Vincent proved tough to tackle all weekend and bust through a lot in all games.

“At centre he made some tackle busts and gave us go-forward. He also scored one our tries in the final.”

Alexander Dunemann

“Alexander was our full-back and showed plenty of speed in all games.

“He got us off our line on a number of occasions and was solid at the back.”

Connor Sullivan

“I don’t like giving praise to my young bloke but I think he deserves it.

“The commentators for our game against the Falcons said he was the work-horse of the team which summed his performances up, I think.”

Andrew Champney

“Another second-rower who hardly had a rest over the weekend.

“He just kept going and going and epitomised the team’s overall effort at the carnival.”
