Teen armed robber’s 20 Cleveland detention centre assaults

After an armed robbery with a fake weapon, a child offender unleashed a wave of violence against staff and police in a youth detention facility.

The child, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to 25 charges in Rockhampton District Court on June 26.

Each charge was read out individually for the child to enter his pleas, naming 20 different victims for the assault type offences – nine serious assaults with aggravating circumstances, eight serious assaults and three of common assault.

The child also carried out an armed robbery in Gracemere on November 23, 2024, while pretending to be armed with a gun.

He also stole household goods from Kmart at Stockland Rockhampton in Berserker on November 17, 2024.

The teen also caused damage to detention property three times.

The assaults took place in the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Townsville.

He assaulted two males on December 17, 2024 and another on December 22, 2024.

Then he assaulted two workers on January 13, 2025 and a police officer at the centre.

The teenager damaged a smoke detector at Cleveland on January 14, 2025.

He assaulted another police officer on January 22 by biting them.

Two days later, he assaulted a female worker.

The teen attacked four workers on February 12 – three of those while armed.

Four days later, he attacked four people – three who were police officers with one of those the teen spat on.

The boy assaulted one person on March 17 and caused bodily harm to a detention staff member from an assault on March 23.

He damaged a drinking fountain, along with a light and television perspex on May 14 and 15.

The teen also spat on a detention centre employee that day.

He carried out the final assault on a detention centre employee on May 30.

A presentence report was ordered and his sentencing set down to occur on August 18.
