Firefighters are working to extinguish a large vegetation fire which has entered a Central Queensland mine site.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said QFD was called at 10.37am to a vegetation fire on the Capricorn Highway near Blackwater.

She said as of 11am, the fire was 10 hectares in size with 2m-high flames.

The spokeswoman said that as of 2.40pm, there were five rural fire crews at the scene and the fire had burned into a mine site.

She said fire crews were trying to contact a manager at the mine site to assist with the firefighting efforts.

The nearest mine site to the Capricorn Highway where the fire is listed on the QFD map belongs to Whitehaven.
