Rockhampton Regional Council in court over workplace health and safety matter, bus driver seriously injured from flying rock of lawnmower

Rockhampton Regional Council will face court on Friday for a workplace health and safety breach for an incident in Gracemere where a bus driver was allegedly seriously injured. Full details here.

The Office of Industrial Relations is taking Rockhampton Regional Council to court for breaching the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.

The matter relates to an incident at Viney Street, Gracemere on March 17, 2020, where a bus driver suffered serious head injuries after allegedly being hit by a rock thrown from the rear of a mower used by a council employee.

Queensland Ambulance Service reported at the time a male in his late 50s was hit by a flying rock and was treated for a head injury.

He was taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition.

Council has been charged with a Category 2 offence for allegedly breaching the Act and allegedly putting the health and safety of other persons at risk.

The matter was heard at court in November 2021 and council indicated it would be pleading guilty.

The matter is due to be heard again on Friday, February 25 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

If council is required to pay any penalties or costs, this may be covered by insurance.
