Two women have been charged in relation to an incident where a child was found unconscious on a bus at a Central Queensland childcare centre in May.

Police announced on July 5, just before 4pm, that two Gracemere women had been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm.

Police will allege the women, aged 30 and 31, picked up the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, about 8.30am on May 4 and drove to a childcare centre in Gracemere where they parked the bus and left the child in the bus.

It will be further alleged another staff member drove the bus to a school in Gracemere, about 2.45pm, and observed the child unconscious in the back of the bus.

The three-year-old girl was unconscious and was taken into the centre where staff began CPR and emergency services were called.

She was in a critical condition, taken to Rockhampton Hospital and then flown to Brisbane for treatment at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

She has since recovered and returned home.

In a press conference after the incident, Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said the child was located in the second row of the back of the van and had her bag with her at the time.

The van was parked at the front of the centre entrance, next to the gate where parents and staff enter the centre.

Speaking from the scene of the Gracemere incident, Queensland Ambulance Service Central Region operations manager Jason Thompson described the situation as traumatic.

Mr Thompson said the girl did not need to be intubated but remained in a critical but stable condition at hospital with her parents.

“The child was unconscious at the start and they gave (her) some treatment just reviving them, they didn’t have to intubate the young child. Once they had a good airway they transported her,” he said.

The two accused women are due to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on July 26.
