A young mother claims she did not believe an iPhone she pawned at Cash Converters was stolen, a court has heard.

Tjhannaye Laurelle Lee Doyle, 20, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on October 5 to one count each of receiving tainted property and fraud.

Police prosecutor Clancy Fox said an iPhone was stolen from an address on Murray Street, Rockhampton, by unknown people in February and that Doyle came into possession of it.

Mr Fox said Doyle attended Cash Converters Rockhampton on February 17 in possession of the stolen iPhone and received $700.

He said police spoke to Doyle on August 21 and that she told officers she purchased the phone from someone else and did not believe it was stolen.

He said $700 compensation was sought.

Defence lawyer Ken Spinaze said his client was the mother of a young child and had no criminal history.

Mr Spinaze said his client had a difficult upbringing.

“There were instances that occurred during her life that have caused her some anxiety and caused her to become stressed on particular occasions and also caused her to sometimes make poor choices,” he said.

He referred to his client’s offending as a “poor choice”.

“She should have known the person that sold her the phone was not the owner of it,” he said.

Doyle was ordered to nine months’ probation with no criminal convictions recorded.

She was also ordered to pay $700 compensation.
