A supermarket in North Rockhampton was allegedly robbed by a man and a co-offender at the weekend at knifepoint because they were hungry, a court has heard.

Dennis Bryan Tobane, 23, applied for bail in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on October 5.

Mr Tobane was charged with one count each of armed robbery with actual violence and entering premises with intent.

Police prosecutor Clancy Fox opposed bail being granted to Mr Tobane.

Magistrate Cameron Press read the facts of the charge to the court, which stated Mr Tobane and a co-offender attended FoodWorks on Main Street, Park Avenue, on October 2 and allegedly demanded money from the registers from an employee.

The court heard Mr Tobane and the co-offender allegedly said, “Don’t do anything stupid, just give us the money out of the registers or we will jab you”.

Mr Tobane was allegedly holding a short kitchen knife and the co-offender was allegedly armed with a pair of scissors he got from the shelf.

It was further heard in court that Mr Tobane and the co-offender allegedly told the employee they were only doing it because they were hungry.

It is alleged they took money from the till.

Mr Fox said the evidence was strong and that Mr Tobane made no attempt to conceal his identity.

“A knife was used, there were threats to jab the victim,” he said.

Defence lawyer Brandon Selic said briefs of evidence would need to be ordered as the matters would need to go up to the district court.

Mr Selic said if granted bail his client would reside with his father in Brisbane and also suggested reporting conditions and a tracking device.

He said given the nature of the offences and how long the process would take to finalise the matters there was potential his client would be held on remand for too long.

Mr Fox argued Mr Tobane was not at risk of serving too much time yet.

Mr Press refused to grant Mr Tobane bail, stating he was at risk of committing further offences and failing to appear.

Mr Tobane’s matters were adjourned to December 7 and he was remanded in custody.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said as of Wednesday afternoon, a co-offender had not been charged.

Investigations are ongoing.
