A young man on bail for multiple charges, including rape, failed to report to police 23 times, a court heard.
Caleb Shawn Mailman, 21, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to four counts of breaching bail and made a fresh application for bail on January 22.
Magistrate Lance Rundle said Mailman had one charge each of rape and assault occasioning bodily harm which had been through the process to be sent to the district court, but he still had an unlawful use of a motor vehicle and a trespass charge in the Magistrates jurisdiction.
Police prosecutor Corey O’Connor said Mailman was granted bail in October with a condition he was not to go to Yeppoon except for medical appointments and to report to police regularly.
He said police located him at a Yeppoon address on January 21 in breach of his bail.
Mr O’Connor said Mailman told police he had stayed at the address where his mother was located as he was unwell and planned to return to Rockhampton later that day.
The court heard Mailman failed to report between November 26 and January 21 along with other bail breaches on November 1 and November 8.
Mr O’Connor said Mailman failed to report to police 23 times in total.
Defence lawyer Ashley Reynolds said Mailman had been bailed to live at his grandmother’s with his father and his uncle.
She said his uncle was under the influence of methamphetamine and he had a “falling out” with Mailman’s grandmother.
Ms Reynolds said Mailman’s grandmother kicked all three men out and her client was temporarily without accommodation.
She said it was around the same time he found out his mother had heart issues and was refusing to go to hospital so he travelled to the Capricorn Coast to care for her.
Ms Reynolds said Mailman instructed he had work lined up with his father out of Rockhampton and could provide a roster to police and report in with them when he was not working.
Mailman was placed on 18 months' probation and bail was granted.
His outstanding charges are set to be mentioned in March.
