Construction is progressing for Rockhampton’s second ALDI, which is expected to open in early 2025 and will be followed by works at the cinema.
The supermarket is being built in the Stockland Rockhampton Shopping Centre car park near Kmart and Coles.
Construction started in February and the building is currently getting its internal fit out.
There will be a covered pedestrian access to the shopping centre outside the 6.25 metres high building which will have a gross floor area of 1725 sqm.
Stockland Rockhampton senior centre manager Christopher O’Rourke said ALDI was expected to open in early February 2025.
“We look forward to soon welcoming ALDI’s second store in Rockhampton,” he said.
“We value our role in providing the community with access to everyday essentials and services at Stockland Rockhampton.”
An ALDI spokesperson said, “We are excited to bring our unique shopping experience to Park Avenue early next year.
“We will update the community as our plans progress,” the spokesperson said.
There were 123 car parks permanently removed to make way for the new supermarket.
At this stage, there are no plans to build additional carparking at the shopping centre, which still has more than 2500 parking spaces.
ALDI first opened in Rockhampton in October 2019 next to Fantastic Furniture.
In 2017, ALDI announced it would be building two stores in Rockhampton.
There were plans for an $20 million development including an ALDI to be built on the land across from Stockland Rockhampton in front of Spotlight however, Stockland appealed against it in 2018 and meditation was held.
The plans for the new store built in the Stockland car park were lodged with council in 2021.
Commercial building company SJ Higgins was awarded the build tender in July 2022.
Works on Birch Carroll and Coyle Cinemas Rockhampton are expected to start in February 2025.
The cinemas will be fully refurbished, increasing from five cinemas to six.
There are no plans to connect the cinema to The Terrace.
Over the past few months, two new stores have opened in Stockland Rockhampton.
Corasol Shoes opened near BIG W on November 8.
Annee’s Caphê Sua Da, Australia’s first free standing Vietnamese iced coffee bar, also opened back on September 3 and is located directly opposite Corasol Shoes.
