Brothers White players get around teammate after he suffers injury in Rocky grand final

Forward Liam Mayne was injured in the second half of the Rockhampton junior rugby league grand final on Saturday. Read about what his teammates did as he lay waiting for an ambulance.

There were touching scenes as Brothers White under-14 rugby league players rushed to be with an injured teammate after their thrilling grand final win.

Forward Liam Mayne fell awkwardly in a tackle early in the second half of the Rockhampton and District Junior Rugby League decider against Yeppoon at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Training staff and medical officers rushed to him as he lay motionless, flat on his back.

Every precaution was taken as an ambulance was called, and Liam was placed on a spinal board and carried from the field.

His dad Kurt was by his side, reassuring him that things would be okay and giving a running commentary on the game to help keep him calm.

After the official presentations, Liam’s teammates ran over and encircled him as he lay waiting for an ambulance, congratulating him and showing him the premiership shield.

Liam was then transferred to Rockhampton Hospital where he was assessed and given the all-clear.

Kurt said he could not have been happier with the treatment his son received, from those at the ground to the ambulance officers and then staff at the hospital.

He said he was confident that his son was not seriously injured and that the call for the ambulance was only precautionary.

“Liam was chasing a player who broke the line and he overextended and basically did a cartwheel,” he said.

“He was fine the whole way through and I was very comfortable with the treatment he was receiving on the ground.

“At no point was I concerned for his safety but once the trainers start the process you’ve got to follow it through.”

The Maynes hail from Rolleston, a town in the Central Highlands where Liam started playing footy when he was about eight.

He has been a boarder at The Cathedral College for the past two years.

Kurt said it was wonderful to see the response from his Brothers‘ teammates after the win.

“The mateship they’ve got going through the squad is great,” he said.

“For my son to move to Rocky and fit into a footy family like that is a real pleasure.”

Liam’s teammates conjured up an inspired comeback after the 20-minute break in play, going on to score with about 90 seconds on the clock to snatch a 12-8 win and claim back-to-back premierships.

Stand-in coach Damien Seibold said it was a determined victory.

“They did a good job to stay in it long enough to win,” he said.

“They just kept fighting.

“They’d be the first to admit they didn’t play great but they hung in there and gave themselves the opportunity.”

Lock Archie Lloyd was named Brothers’ Man of the Match, while prop Terell Ross-Miller was received that honour for Yeppoon.
